Hello Readers~ 😀

I’m not a huge graphic novel reader and really only read them few and far between. However, I’ve heard of Brian K.Vaughan and Fiona Staples Saga Series EVERYWHERE. So I totally caved and decided to give them a shot. (twist my arm… not)

First item, these are NOT for children. Not even for young adults. These are for full grown adult adults. Please keep this in mind if you purchase. It does cover the gamut on graphic themes.

“If there’s an opposite of a honeymoon, it’s the week after a couple’s first child is born.”
― Brian K. Vaughan, Saga, Vol. 1

Being as this series is a comic, they’re easy reads, and I made the decision to read the first 4 before making a review to get a decent feel for the plot, dialogue, and characters.

I was pleasantly surprised.  (*cue thumbs up*)

Brian K. Vaughan is the writer and starts the story rough. Volume One puts you right into the thick of things and gives no warm fuzzes of safety for his characters. You know things will hit the fan and things hit all over, around, outside, and inside. It’s quite the roller coaster and you get excellent plot movement in each volume.

Fiona Staples does the art work for this comic and her character design is beautiful. As someone that’s attempted to be originally artistic… her work is leaps, bounds, and universes past anything I can do and it’s interesting to see all the difference species come to life through her work. (All I gotta say is The Stalk… that’s a heck of a character design #BAMF)

“A lot of people who came into my family’s life looking like heroes ended up acting more like villains.”
― Brian K. Vaughan, Saga, Vol. 4

Even though this is sold as a graphic novel, the dialogue and writing is poetic, extremely insightful and realistic. (Again, I’m not usually a graphic novel reader, so this was a nice surprise for me.)
It deals with a lot of close to home situations in the world today and frankly does a great job showing a struggling family trying to survive. Yes, it’s held in space (not really a spoiler, you find this out in the first couple pages). Yes, there’s magic (I totally would want magic if I could have it). However, none of these items detract from the grittiness or the realism of the plot. In fact, to me, it made the impact more stark – for all their differences, we all can relate in some way or form.

Now Characters, strap on your seat belt guys. We have an author here that is buddies with George Martin I’m sure. NOBODY, is safe. I’ve only read 4 Volumes folks and I’m saying that. …… ain’t nobody safe…. (heaven help me if my favorite character is harmed #teamlyingcat) I’m honestly not sure if there’s any character I dislike on a whole? They all have a part and they’re all written (and drawn) very well.

  • Overall Rating: 4 Stars
  • Plot: 4 stars
  • Character Development: 4 Stars
  • Dialogue: 4 Stars
  • Writing: 4 Stars

Will this series make me read more graphic novels? Probably not haha but I have enjoyed this series so far….. and I like to finish a story so I’ll absolutely continue reading. <3
I’d recommend this series to anyone that reads comics (and is an adult) or anyone that enjoys fantasy. 🙂
They are quick reads and enjoyable for each moment of content~
